Finding A Job

So, you’ve decided you want to do an Apprenticeship. Excellent choice, you’ve made the first step to gaining skills and qualifications which are specific to a particular industry. Now you need to look for a job in that area before you can begin your programme (with the exception of Childcare if you’re under 17 as you will be on a placement for 3 days a week initially).

At Total People, we know that looking for a job can be tricky, especially if you’ve not done it before.

We want to help you get the most out of this exciting experience.

Here are some questions that are most commonly asked.

“Where can I look for work?”

“How do I apply for jobs?”

“What jobs can I do at 16?”

At 16, you can have a full-time job if you have officially left school (this rule applies until 2013). You need to remember that you can’t work full-time until the last Friday in June – even if you have turned 16 before that date. You will be sent a National Insurance card just before your 16th birthday – keep it safe you’ll need it to start work.

Jobs are available in all kinds of industries, although some might have restrictions on the type of jobs available. Laws in the childcare industry for example, prevent 16 year olds from being fully employed. This means that young people are taken on as ‘trainees’ and work with someone who supervises them until they are older. These young people will still receive an allowance from their employer, and Education Maintenance Allowance, or a combination of the two.
