Although I did a Business Studies A-Level, I had no practical experience or skills. Working here means that I can see how businesses and strategies really work. |
Maxine Hollis works as a Receptionist/Administrator at the South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce in Crewe.
“I love working in an office,” says Maxine. “My job varies everyday and the atmosphere is really friendly. I answer the phone, sort out the post, and create many flyers and leaflets for our events. I learn new things everyday. I will be getting training for health and safety, exporting documents and all the Microsoft programs which will help me out in the future career.”
Maxine completed her Business Administration Apprenticeship whilst on a six month placement at a High School. “I really enjoyed it,” says Maxine. “I found the work enjoyable and easy to complete. I had full support from my colleagues and Total People Training Adviser through out my placement”.
Maxine is now working towards an Apprenticeship in IT, again with the support of Total people.
“I’d recommend the Apprenticeship route to anyone who wants to work in a business environment,” says Maxine. “Although I did a Business Studies A-Level, I had no practical experience or skills. Working here means that I can see how businesses and strategies really work. It has been easy to combine my job with the training because it’s very flexible and I always know I can rely on my Training Adviser if I need any help. For the future I want to keep taking opportunities, learn new things, and meet new people. I want to progress up the career ladder”.
What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a work-based learning programme designed to give you the skills and knowledge needed to develop your prospects and career in the industry. By undertaking training and development in Business & Administration you will start to realise your potential in your chosen area. As an Administrator, you will study subjects such as Career working, Time Management, and Information Systems.
As an effective administrator, you'll need to have good communication skills, be well-organised and be able to use your initiative.
The level 3 qualification is intended for individuals whose role involves carrying out administrative duties with a considerable amount of responsibility and autonomy. It demonstrates team leading and specialist technical skills with competence in communication, problem solving and applied teamwork. For example, supervising an office facility, running projects, organising meetings, evaluating and analysing information.
How do I find an Apprenticeship?
Business & Administration Apprenticeships are work-based which means you need to be employed before you can start your training.
If you need assistance in finding a job, then advice and guidance is available from; Connexions, internet job sites, and Job Centre Plus. You can even try friends and family to see if they know anybody who may have a vacancy.
Once you have gained employment contact Total People!
What happens then?
Total People will send one of their Training Advisers out to you. They will sit down with both yourself and your employer to arrange your learning plan.
Your training will be tailored around your individual needs.
How long will it take?
The time taken to complete your qualification depends upon you; how quickly you can prove your competence. However, completion normally takes around 12 months depending on the level undertaken.
The Technical Certificate is delivered alongside your qualification.
The other element of your Apprenticeship, Key Skills, takes around 12 months to complete, but again is dependant upon you!
Completing your Apprenticeship
Your Business & Administration Apprenticeship is made up from 3 core elements;
- NVQ Level 2
- Technical Certificate Level 2
- Key Skills – Application of Number Level 1, Communication Level 2
Your NVQ portfolio may be paper-based or electronic and contain work-based evidence.
When you have obtained sufficient knowledge and understanding of administrative practices, the Technical Certificate will be achieved via an exam. The Technical Certificate gives you the underpinning knowledge needed to carry out the tasks of your NVQ.
Key Skills are similar to Maths and English GCSEs however; learning is focussed around Business & Administration. For example, you will learn how to analyse time management!
Further Progression
Being qualified will open many doors to you. You will be able to show your employer that, along with being qualified, you have also shown commitment, dedication and professionalism. This could lead to promotion, higher rates of pay, and even managerial opportunities.
Many apprentices decide to progress their education through professional qualifications like ONCs, HNCs, and degrees as well as other vocational routes such as Customer Service, IT, Accounts, and Management.
