I can already tell a difference in my work – I’m turning any weaknesses into strengths. |
Katie Wright, 21, is the Assistant Deputy Manager at Hobson’s Nursery in Northwich.
After completing an NVQ Level 3 in Childcare with the support of Total People, Katie was keen to keep on learning, so her manager suggested that she embark on a Management qualification. “I’m really enjoying the Level 2 Team Leader training,” says Katie. “It is very different to any of the other training that I’ve undertaken and I’m learning lots of new Management skills. It’s given me the flexibility to work in different situations and the ability to take on new challenges, enabling me to develop and progress”.
Charlotte Dawson, 22, works as the Assistant Manager at Hobson’s. Charlotte decided that she wanted to further herself, and as Total People were already involved in training at Hobson’s she spoke to a Training Adviser and signed up for a Level 3 Management qualification. “It’s so good,” says Charlotte. “I can already tell a difference in my work – I’m turning any weaknesses into strengths. My Training Adviser is lovely, very helpful and flexible. I’d like to go onto a Level 4 qualification next”.
Kerry Eccles is the Group Training Manager. She too is in the process of completing the Level 3 Management qualification. “Total People have been excellent,” explains Kerry. “I’m finding the training really beneficial. It’s very varied but my Training Adviser always makes sure that all of the work in the NVQ can be applied directly to the nursery. I want to go onto the Level 4 next – it’s fantastic!”.
What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a work-based learning programme designed to give you the skills and knowledge needed to develop your prospects and career in the industry. Management and Team Leading roles cover a wide range of positions in an equally wide range of organisations, from small and large private companies to major public bodies. Managers can manage projects, run teams, departments and entire organisations. You'll need excellent communication skills, an ability to get on well with a wide range of people, and the desire to progress through hard work, enthusiasm and initiative.
The Advanced Apprenticeship is available to you once you have completed your Apprenticeship. These are identical in structure to the Apprenticeship however, learning is at Level 3 which is equivalent to ‘A’ Level standard.
How do I find an Apprenticeship?
The first thing you need to do is to find a job. Management Apprenticeships are work-based which means you need to be employed before you can start your training.
There are many places you can go to find a job; Connexions, local papers, internet job sites, and Job Centre Plus. You can even try friends and family to see if they know anybody who may have a vacancy.
Once you have gained employment contact Total People!
What happens then?
Total People will send one of their Training Advisers out to you. They will sit down with both yourself and your employer to arrange your learning plan.
Your training will require you to attend college for one day a week. Your employer will give you time off to attend your classes and meet with your Training Adviser.
How long will it take?
The time taken to completing your NVQ depends upon you; how quickly you want to do it. However it normally takes around 12 months to complete.
The Technical Certificate is delivered at a college, therefore, you will tend to start in September and finish at around May / June time.
The other element of your Apprenticeship, Key Skills, takes around 12 months to complete, but again is dependant upon you!
Completing your Apprenticeship
Your Management Apprenticeship is made up from 3 core elements;
- NVQ
- Technical Certificate
- Key Skills
Your NVQ portfolio is like a work diary, it records your activities and experiences. Your portfolio is assessed to make sure you are competent. Your work will be assessed at your place of work.
The Technical Certificate gives you the underpinning knowledge needed to carry out the tasks of your NVQ.
Key Skills are similar to Maths and English GCSEs however, learning is focussed around Management.
Further Progression
Being qualified will open many doors to you. You will be able to show your employer that, along with being qualified, you have also shown commitment, dedication and professionalism.
Many apprentices decide to progress their education through professional qualifications like ONCs, HNCs, and even degrees.
