Apprenticeships must not be seen as the ‘poor relative’ to degrees

tick on exellent

After the dust of results day has settled, apprenticeships are in the spotlight once again. The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants has stressed the importance of having multiple routes into careers, which with the forthcoming introduction of the Apprenticeships Levy, has made apprenticeships even more important.

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants commissioned a poll of 16-18 year olds to find out what young people really think of apprenticeships. In many respects, the findings showed that apprenticeship routes are still seen as the ‘poor relative’ when compared with going to university. Furthermore, the poll found one-third of those polled, have had no careers advice on apprenticeship pathways.  Another key misunderstanding highlighted by the ACCA found that students believed that apprenticeships can narrow career options too much. While apprenticeships do provide much needed industry experience, they also develop soft skills such as customer service, which can be transferred into many professions.

For this image to change there needs to be a culture shift in the way apprenticeships are viewed by schools, parents and pupils/students and this must start with careers advice that is open to discuss the opportunities that apprenticeships can potentially offer.

The Apprenticeship Levy Is Coming, Are You Ready?

In the 2015 Autumn Budget, the Chancellor announced the introduction of a new levy on all large UK employers to fund Apprenticeships. The levy underpins the Government’s Apprenticeship reform programme and its commitment to achieving 3 million Apprenticeship starts by 2020 – a 35% increase in the Apprenticeships delivered in the last Parliament. The levy is intended to provide the funding and incentives to help deliver this commitment.

The levy will support all post-16 Apprenticeships in England. It will provide funding that each employer can use to meet their individual needs. The funding will be directly controlled by employers via the digital Apprenticeships voucher, and firms that are committed to training will be able to get back more than they put in.
