Below is an overview of the Hairdressing Apprenticeship, outlining the qualifications you will achieve and the units and vocational areas you will cover throughout your training as well as other important information such as course duration and funding.

  • Apprenticeship in Hairdressing
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing
  • Key Skill Application of Number Level 1
  • Key Skill Communication Level 1
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
Units covered During your Apprenticeship you will be required to cover the following:

  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Change hair colour
  • Style and finish hair
  • Set and dress hair
  • Cut hair using basic techniques
  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation

You are also required to take a number of optional units:

  • Fulfil salon reception duties
  • Promote additional services or products to clients
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
  • Plait and twist hair
  • Perm and neutralise hair
Entry requirements You must be employed in a hairdressing salon for at least 30 hours/week.
Who is it for? A Hairdressing Apprenticeship is for anyone who’s serious about a hairdressing career. There are options to suit individual needs and aspirations – and if you’re already working in hairdressing, you could develop your skills to become a senior stylist.

Assessment method The NVQ Diploma is assessed in the workplace or a realistic working environment. The qualifications are likely to call for a variety of assessment methods and the national occupational standards define what is to be assessed. Methods of assessment include:

  • Observation of performance
  • Questioning
  • Knowledge assessments with both online and paper tests available

You will need an environment where you can develop your knowledge and practice your skills.

Personal qualities To have a successful career in hairdressing you need drive and motivation to help you constantly improve and update your personal and technical skills, in order to stay ahead of emerging trends and fashions.
Further progression Once you have completed your Apprenticeship you can look at moving on to:

  • Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing
  • Apprenticeship in Barbering

Advanced Apprenticeship

Qualifications
  • Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing
  • Key Skill Application of Number Level 2

Units covered During your Advanced Apprenticeship you will be required to cover the following:

  • Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
  • Promote additional services or products to clients
  • Provide hairdressing consultation services
  • Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques

You are also required to take a number of optional units, depending on credit size. Only one optional unit can be selected from group 2.
Optional Group 1:

  • Colour hair using a variety of techniques
  • Provide colour correction services
  • Creatively style and dress hair
  • Creatively dress long hair
  • Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills
  • Create a variety of permed effects
  • Provide creative hair extension services

Optional Group 2:

  • Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business
  • Support client service improvements
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities
