Below is an overview of the Retail Apprenticeship, outlining the qualifications you will achieve and the units and vocational areas you will cover throughout your training as well as other important information such as course duration and funding.

  • Apprenticeship in Retail Skills
  • Level 2 Diploma in Retail Skills
  • Technical Certificate in Retail Knowledge Level 2
  • Key Skill Application of Number Level 1
  • Key Skill Communication Level 1
Units covered Depending on your job role you could cover a range of the following topics through your Diploma for example:

  • Work effectively in a Retail team
  • Organising the receipt and storage of stock
  • Displaying and merchandising stock
  • Promoting loyalty schemes to customers
  • Processing payments

Entry requirements You must be employed at least 30 hours/week.
Who is it for? This qualification is aimed at those wanting to develop skills and knowledge in retail for example:

  • Sales Assistant
  • Beauty Advisers
  • Cashiers
  • Merchandiser

Aged 25 and over

Duration 12 months (approx)
Start date Available all year
Assessment method You will put together a portfolio of evidence that will be assessed using a range of methods. Observation of real work will be used for all competence based units, in addition you will be asked to provide witness testimony and discussion and carry out knowledge based questions. You will be required to complete some online tests.
Personal qualities To work in a retail environment you will need to have the following personal qualities:

  • Team worker
  • Good people skills
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Able to follow instructions
Further progression Once you have completed your Apprenticeship you can look at moving on to level 3 Diploma in Retail Skills, dependent on your job role.

Advanced Apprenticeship

Qualifications
  • Advanced Apprenticeship in Retail Skills
  • Level 3 Diploma in Retail Skills – either Sales Professional, Visual Merchandising or Management (dependant on job role)
  • Technical Certificate in Retail Knowledge Level 3
  • Key Skill Application of Number Level 2
  • Key Skill Communication Level 2
Units covered Depending on your job role you could cover a range of the following topics through your Diploma for example:

  • Help to manage a retail team
  • Organise the delivery of reliable customer service
  • Order graphic materials for visual merchandising displays
  • Source required goods and services in a retail environment
