Being able to actively demonstrate the values and principles of AstraZeneca and having a permanent readiness to help, is part of the criteria for achieving the award, something which Nick showed in abundance. |
AstraZeneca and Total People Apprentice Nick Gregson has been named ‘Apprentice of the Year’ at the organisation’s annual awards evening. The 23-year old from Stockport, Cheshire has recently completed his four year Advanced Apprenticeship programme in Engineering.
Nick left school at 16 knowing that it was a career in Engineering that he wanted to pursue. He studied towards a National Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering at Macclesfield College where he got a feel for the industry and was given work experience opportunities. Having completed this in two years, he heard about the training opportunities available at AstraZeneca and decided to apply for the Apprenticeship scheme. He was successful in his interview and enrolled onto the four year programme.
In his time at Astra Zeneca, Nick gained valuable experience in various departments gaining a good insight by observing and working with Maintenance Engineers. He attended Macclesfield College to work on his Technical Certificate and studied Key Skills where he developed his skills in IT, Application of Number and Communication. He achieved his NVQ Level 2 and 3 in Engineering Maintenance and also achieved his BTEC National in Engineering Manufacturing at Macclesfield College and a HNC gaining 8 Distinctions and 1 Merit.
Nick was subsequently selected as AstraZeneca’s Apprentice of the Year having matched and exceeded the organisation’s key criteria in the awarding of the accolade. “He achieved high levels of commendation from college tutors, NVQ assessors and the Engineering teams he has worked with during his Apprenticeship” says Joanna Higgingbottom, Apprentice Scheme Manager at AstraZeneca. “Being able to actively demonstrate the values and principles of AstraZeneca and having a permanent readiness to help, is part of the criteria for achieving the award, something which Nick showed in abundance.”
Nick is now a permanent full time employee at AstraZeneca and is a key member of the engineering team at the Macclesfield site.
The Apprenticeship scheme at AstraZeneca is run across two sites in Cheshire and South Manchester and enables young people to receive quality work based training whilst continuing to study towards recognised vocational qualifications (NVQ’s). Total People has been providing training for AstraZeneca Apprentices for a number of years and the link between the two organisations is professional and of the highest quality.
