	The Literacy and Numeracy qualifications have brushed up my skills and I don’t feel rusty anymore.  I feel more confident about writing letters and my spelling has improved.

Carol Smith, 50, works at Sunflex, Staffordshire, a large production and distribution warehouse supplying curtain accessories to stores nationwide.  Carol works in the production department and has worked for the company for three and a half years.

In May 2007 Carol started her Level 2 NVQ in Distribution, Warehousing and Storage Operations.  Carol says, “The NVQ has given me more confidence with my work.  I am doing different things in my role now and the NVQ has made me more confident in my ability to perform these tasks; there is also a better sense of teamwork. “ 

Whilst doing her NVQ, Carol has also taken up the opportunity to gain qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy.  Working with a tutor on a one-to-one basis, she has achieved a Certificate in Adult Literacy at Level 2 and is now brushing up her numeracy with the aim of a Certificate in Adult Numeracy at Level 2.   (Level 2 qualifications are the same level as GCSE grades A*-C.)

Carol says, “The Literacy and Numeracy have brushed up my skills and I don’t feel rusty anymore.  I feel more confident about writing letters and my spelling has improved.  I have always enjoyed maths and this makes you more aware of using maths in everyday life.  Although I am older, some people might think, why are doing it, but I don’t think you can ever know enough, and brushing up on your skills helps you in everyday life.  Also, you can help your kids, and maybe grandkids in the future.”

Of the Total People staff that she has worked with Carol says, “My Training Adviser and tutor have been encouraging and supportive.  They are easy to talk to, flexible and responsive to my needs.  I have really enjoyed it and they have been very helpful.”
