Richard Scott and Gary Barker are both employed as Fork Lift Truck Drivers at Sunflex in Cannock.

They both left school after GCSEs, and found employment through agencies. “It’s a busy job,” says Gary “we have to learn where everything goes and be able to move around the warehouse properly”.

After they’d been working for a while, Gary and Richard’s supervisor asked them if they would like to take part in some work based training.

“It seemed like a really good idea,” says Richard. “It meant that we could prove what we could do – and no one can ever take qualifications away from you”.

A Training Adviser from Total People visited Sunflex, and explained the apprenticeship programme and the range of options available. “After the first visit everything was clear and the Training Adviser visited us regularly to make sure we were alright. He was really helpful and the timeframes he gave us to complete the work were always very reasonable,” says Gary.

Richard and Gary achieved their full frameworks and are both very proud of their success.

“We earn more money and feel more capable. Total People were really fair and looked after us throughout the training,” says Richard. “The next step is more training and more qualifications – giving us more opportunity of working our way up!”.
