Jayne Murphy is Home Manager for The Elms, a 40 room residential home situated in Crewe, Cheshire. In March 2006, Jayne, Sue Duckers, Home Services Manager and Activity Co-ordinator Julie Parkinson began a computer literacy course (CLAiT) with local training provider Total People.

Enthused by this qualification and a commitment to life long learning, Jayne encouraged her staff to get involved with a range of funded learning programmes. This included numeracy and literacy which not only benefit the company but also the individuals.

To begin with there was little enthusiasm for the programme as most staff felt that it was either unnecessary or felt they had been out of school too long for any learning. However, Jayne, Sue and Julie paved the way for taking their national tests and staff soon warmed to the idea. The staff completed Initial Assessments and were put onto tailored numeracy and literacy learning programmes that developed at their own pace, working towards National Certificate in Numeracy and Literacy, equivalent to today’s GCSEs.

By September, 11 members of staff had completed their literacy National Certificate. “The staff felt much more positive after they had completed their qualifications. I can see a huge difference in their communication skills and their levels of confidence,” says Jayne. “I would definitely recommend Total People’s courses to other businesses. Our tutor has been brilliant. She helped to put the staff at ease, so that they were more comfortable on the course.”

Jayne has already organized for the care team leaders to brush up on their ICT skills in order for them to keep up with the new technology coming into the profession as well as encouraging the staff to continue with their learning. CLS’s commitment to developing their staff was recognized earlier this year with the group’s achievement off IIP (Investors In People) status.
