Applying for Jobs? Make sure your application stands out for all the right reasons!
When applying for jobs, you might need to supply a record of your personal details and work experience. This is called a C.V. (Curriculum Vitae).
C.V.s are also handy to send out to companies on the off chance that they might have positions available. It might just be that your timing is great and the ideal job is available.
If you’re applying for one of our advertised Apprenticeship Vacancies online, most of the information on a C.V. can be easliy transfered over to your profile on the Apprenticeships Website.
It’s good to have your C.V. handy so that you can react quickly if a job or training place becomes available.
Here are some tips for preparing your C.V.
Before you start, gather together all your education, work experience and personal details. When did you start High School? What date did your last job finish? What qualifications do you have?
Write your C.V. in order:
- Start with your personal details; name, date of birth etc.
- Next, put in your education details.
- Then your work experience details in date order starting with most recent first.
- Next, put in some personal details like hobbies and achievements.
- Then add any other relevant information such as driving licence or computer skills.
- You should finish with the names of two people – referees – who know you and will support your application.
Your C.V. should only be 2 pages long, using a separate sheet for each page.
These tips might help:
- Restrict personal details to only half a page.
- Keep education as brief as possible but include qualifications.
- Ensure all your work experience is listed. If you do not have much experience, include any part-time or casual work, including your main responsibilities/duties. You should also include details of any voluntary work.
- Make sure you have a sensible email address! crazyhyperloopylou@hotmail.com is really going to make you stand out in a negative way when a potential employer is looking through applications! If you have to set up a new one just for job searching then it’s definitely worth doing so.
The appearance of your C.V. really matters:
- Always have your C.V. word processed or typed.
- Use a typeface or font which is very easy to read and will print well.
- Print your C.V. on high quality paper – this will help it to stand out.
- Always check your spelling and ask someone else to proofread your C.V. before you send it.
Next, you will need to write a covering letter to go with your C.V. >>
