Overview

Medica Packaging Limited are looking for an Apprentice Engineer to join the team.

About the apprenticeship

Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Working towards maintaining buildings and associated services to a high standard as set by current legislation, procedures and customer requirements.  Provide proactive maintenance solutions and reactive breakdown repairs to plant, machinery and equipment 
  • Attend breakdown situations with a shift engineer to assess, diagnose and remedy Electrical, Mechanical and Pneumatic faults.  Estimate time to repair and pass assessment details to supervisors using a T card system
  • Carry out daily maintenance checks throughout the plant as instructed by the Engineering Manager 
  • Liaise with Production staff to prioritise breakdown repairs and to schedule repairs/maintenance using a reactive/proactive approach 
  • Provide safe engineering solutions to minimize downtime and repair plant and equipment 
  • Improvise on complex breakdowns where there are no other alternatives 
  • Complete maintenance software programs with accurate details of faults and remedies to include part numbers for future reference on Frontline maintenance and stock control
  • Ensure the 5S method is applied to all workshop equipment, cupboards and stock control to ensure the highest standard at all times
  • Liaise with machine manufacturers and wholesalers to ensure that any spares required are correctly identified and purchased in accordance with Company procedures
  • Identify re-occurring problems and investigate and implement effective solutions 
  • Liaise with main agents and contractors regarding specialist repair/maintenance to be carried out
  • Obtain technical information/specification to assist with fault finding/general repairs  
  • Identify improvements and modify equipment to increase performance and reduce costs
  • Keep up to date with new technology and to be familiar with new machinery operations and systems 
  • Ensure buildings 19,20,25,23 and associated equipment are well maintained to include Sprinklers, Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Power and Lighting, Systems, Drainage and Water supplies
  • Provide innovative engineering solutions for non-engineering problems throughout the organisation
  • Write specific engineering or maintenance based Standard Operating Procedures, COSHH assessments and manuals
  • Ensure adherence at all times to the Company’s Quality Assurance Policies and Procedures and maintain compliance to appropriate standards
  • Research and purchase general items, ancillary equipment and consumables for all departments
  •  Advise on compliance for following specific areas and liaise with HSE Manager regarding: 
  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974; Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations; LOLER; Asbestos; Legionella; Permits to Work; EAW Regulations, etc.
  • Work flexibly to cover absence due to holidays and sickness, and tasks that require two engineers to work together i.e., weekend work
  • Provide engineering support out of hours as availability dictates
  • Ensure adherence at all times to the Company’s Quality Assurance Policies and Procedures and maintain compliance to appropriate standards
  • The quality management system has been designed and developed to meet the requirements of ISO9001, PS9000, BRC, FSC and PEFC.  The quality management system defines the Company’s policies and standard operating procedures on design, product security and safety, hygiene, environment, resource and training
  • Carry out work safely in the interests of other employees and themselves, in compliance with current legislation and Company Environmental, Health & Safety procedures to include general housekeeping
  • Any other tasks associated with this role, which are suited to the individual’s abilities and level of training as directed by the Line Manager

Salary:

1st Year - £16k, 2nd Year - £19.5k, 3rd Year - £22.2k, 4th Year - £25.7k

Previous engineering training or practical would prove an advantage.

Apprenticeship qualification and training

Level 3 Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician apprenticeship standard, which includes:

  • Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)
  • End-Point Assessment (EPA)
