About the apprenticeship

We are looking for 2 Bus Engineering Apprentices to join our team in Chelmsford for our Apprentice intake in May 2020!

Do you want to be part of our energetic team of Engineers and maintenance staff repairing our fleet of vehicles? If yes, then this Apprenticeship could just be the job for you!

You'll get paid whilst gaining the experience and qualifications to become a fully qualified Engineer with First UK Bus in Chelmsford. This is a MechElec apprenticeship (Mechanical and Electrical Combined).

The salary for this position is:

  • £7.84 year 1 - salaries will be higher for candidates aged 18 and above
  • £8.71 year 2
  • £12.20 year 3
  • £14.81 year 4
  • £17.42 (£34,000+ per year) fully qualified.

As a Bus Engineering Apprentice you will be working 38 hours per week (working hours – Monday to Friday).

What will you be doing?

You'll need to be ready to roll your sleeves up and get stuck into all kinds of challenges from general maintenance and making modifications to fault diagnosis and keeping our interiors and exteriors spick and span along with learning with our partner provider who will support you throughout your learning journey with us.

You will learn to understand the fundamentals of existing and emerging mechanical and electrical design and systems. You will carry out routine safety inspections and routine mechanical and electrical servicing, planned preventative maintenance and “health checks”. Training will also include inspecting, diagnosing and repairing mechanical systems, engine, fuel, coolant and transmission systems.

Entry requirements

  • Three GCSE's at a Grade 4 or above (or equivalent) in Maths, English and a Science

Selection Process

You will be required to attend an assessment day, where you will need to complete a practical, aptitude Maths and English testing. On completion if you are successful, you will be invited to attend an interview. Please make sure you can attend before completing an application form:

Assessment date: 08 April 2020.

Apprenticeship start date: 26th of May (Tues – Sat for week 1).

What are the requirements?

As part of your apprenticeship, you will be required to attend vocational training at a college. This will mean that you may be away from home for a continuous period of one week every two months (in year 1, 2 and 3), so we ask that you are flexible.

If you are successful, you will have to be available to attend a week outward bound on the 26th May 2020 in Devon (Bideford, EX39 1NG). Here you will be fully inducted into the company and onto the apprenticeship scheme. Please note that the induction starts on a Tuesday and will finish on a Saturday afternoon (30th of May).

You will need to attain a full driving licence by the end of the 4-year apprenticeship, as a clean licence is a requirement for full time employment.
