Below is an overview of the Childcare Apprenticeship, outlining the qualifications you will achieve and the units and vocational areas you will cover throughout your training as well as other important information such as course duration and funding.

  • Apprenticeship in Children’s Care Learning and Development
  • Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce
  • Key Skill Application of Number Level 1
  • Key Skill Communication Level 1
  • Paediatric First Aid
  • Health and safety / Manual handling course
  • CWDC induction standards
Units covered You will cover the following units of your Level 2 Certificate:

  • Communication
  • Personal development
  • Equality and inclusion
  • Child and young person development
  • Support development
  • Safeguarding and well being
  • Health and safety
  • Positive behaviour
  • Positive environments
  • Partnership working
  • Supporting relationships
  • Paediatric First aid
  • Managing illness and injury

You will then select option units that relate to your job role to complete your Level 2 Certificate.

Entry requirements You must be employed or on a placement in a childcare setting for at least 30 hours/week.
Who is it for? Specific job roles may include:

  • Assistant playgroups workers
  • Assistants in children’s centres
  • Assistants in day nurseries, nursery schools and nursery classes in primary schools
  • Registered childminders and nannies

General opportunities:

  • Support workers in the above settings
  • Anyone who works with children and young people in the voluntary sector, including volunteers who are not covered by another sector skills body

Aged 25 and over

Advanced Apprenticeship

You will then select option units that relate to your job role to complete your Diploma.

Entry requirements You must be employed in a childcare setting that has a level of supervision of children for at least 30 hours/week.
Who is it for? This qualification is available for different types of learners: those in full time employment who require little or no formal learning; those in full time employment who require some formal learning; those in full time formal learning who require experience in real work environments, those in part time formal learning who require experience. The Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce covers the age range of 0-19 years in a real work environment.This pathway is appropriate for all practitioners working in settings delivering the Early Years Foundation Stage.
