Apprentice Spotlight: Kelly Ann Jones
Apprentice Spotlight: Kelly Ann Jones
Kelly Ann Jones, a Childcare apprentice at The House of Rompa Day Nursery, has been recognised for delivering an inspiring activity that helped pre-school children develop empathy, understanding and awareness of inclusive practice.
Supported by Learning Coach Rachel Heath, Kelly Ann designed and led an engaging session centred around a guide dog in training. The activity introduced children to the role guide dogs play in supporting people who are blind or visually impaired, helping them understand the importance of inclusion and accessibility from an early age.
Bringing Learning to Life
To help children explore the concept in a meaningful way, Kelly Ann created a practical obstacle course where children took turns wearing blindfolds while a partner acted as their guide dog.
The activity encouraged trust, communication and teamwork, while giving children the opportunity to consider how it might feel to navigate the world with a visual impairment. Through discussion and reflection, children were able to share their thoughts and feelings and develop a greater understanding of the experiences of others.
Supporting Children's Development
The session supported a range of key developmental skills, including personal, social and emotional development, communication, cooperation and turn-taking.
By linking learning to a real-world example, Kelly Ann helped children build empathy and respect for others while creating a positive and engaging learning experience.
Demonstrating Professional Growth
Kelly Ann's work showcases the positive impact apprentices can have within early years settings. Her ability to plan purposeful activities, adapt learning to meet children's needs and promote inclusive values demonstrates growing confidence and professionalism in her role.
Through creativity, thoughtful planning and a child-centred approach, Kelly Ann has created a meaningful opportunity for children to learn about kindness, inclusion and understanding.
