Total People is proud to announce that Kelly Ann Jones, our Early Years apprentice at The House of Rompa Day Nursery, is the latest recipient of our Personal Development Award.

The award is part of our commitment to recognise learners who make a positive impact not only through their studies but also within their wider community.

Kelly Ann has been recognised after developing and leading an inspiring practical activity for her pre-school children - “Adopt a Guide Dog” – which strengthened the children’s social and emotional development through meaningful real-world learning.

Reacting to the award, Kelly Ann said: “I am so happy and proud that I have won the Personal Development Award with Total People. It was a huge shock to me to have even been nominated.

I am so happy with the training and support I receive from Total People and I am glad to have chosen them as my training provider.

An enjoyable, inclusive activity

Kelly-Ann introduced the concept of a guide dog in training using clear, age-appropriate language, helping children understand how guide dogs support people who are blind or visually impaired.

She then extended learning through a practical obstacle course, where children took turns wearing blindfolds while a partner guided them, simulating the role of a guide dog. Kelly-Ann provided reassurance, clear instructions and used questioning to encourage reflection on feelings and experiences.

The activity promoted empathy, communication, cooperation and trust, while supporting personal, social and emotional development. It also encouraged language development through discussion.

This practice reflected Kelly-Ann’s ability to plan inclusive, meaningful activities, effectively scaffold learning and connect experiences to real-world understanding, demonstrating her growing confidence and professionalism in early years education.
