Leading Under Pressure: How Apprentice Joanne Buttery Made a Life-Saving Difference

Apprentice Spotlight: Joanne Buttery 

Level 7 Senior People Professional apprentice Joanne Buttery has been presented with a Special Recognition Award for her remarkable composure and decisive action during a medical emergency.    

Joanne, who works at Outwood Grange Academy Trust, acted quickly and calmly when a member of staff experienced an anaphylactic reaction. She assessed the situation, administered an inhaler, coordinated with first aiders, ensured emergency services were contacted and arranged access for the ambulance and defibrillator. Her swift actions helped safeguard the wellbeing of her colleague during a highly challenging situation. 

What made Joanne’s response even more remarkable was her ability to remain composed during a day that involved multiple serious incidents. Alongside supporting the emergency response, she recognised and celebrated the contributions of colleagues who had helped, demonstrating the teamwork and professionalism that are central to effective leadership. 

Joanne’s commitment to maintaining strong emergency procedures, including ensuring appropriate first aid resources were available, further highlighted her dedication to creating a safe and supportive environment for both staff and learners. 

Her actions were publicly commended by the Chair of Governors, who praised her resilience and the way she recognised the efforts of others during a difficult situation. Joanne was described as someone who consistently goes above and beyond to support those around her while embodying the values of the academy. 

Reflecting on the nomination, it is clear that Joanne’s impact extends far beyond her apprenticeship programme. Her ability to lead under pressure, support her colleagues and prioritise the wellbeing of others serves as an inspiring example of the positive difference apprentices can make in their organisations every day.
