Total People have launched a range of improved Study Programmes for young people looking to get back into education.

The new-look Study Programmes for young people not in education, employment or training ensure learners receive the best possible skills to progress into Apprenticeships and employment.

The brand new programmes not only allow learners to work towards a recognised Level 1 BTEC in a vocational area of their choice, but also include additional features including charity events, field trips, an exciting discovery challenge and work experience with local employers.

What is a Study Programme?

A Study Programme is a structured and supported learning programme that lasts up to 12 months. They are suitable for young people aged 16 to 18 years old who may need a little extra support and guidance to get ready for the world of work or further education.

They are also open to learners who may not have passed GCSEs and who need help gaining some work experience.

At Total People, our revamped Study Programmes include a series of confidence-building activities, essential maths and English studies, as well as an enriching programme of work experience and personal development that will help young learners get the experience they need to gain an apprenticeship or further employment or training.

Who can enrol on a Study Programme?

Learners need to be 16-18 years of age and not currently in any education, training or employment.

We accept learners up to 24 years old if they have an existing Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) in place.

You must also live in the Cheshire area and be able to travel to one of our learning sites.

Where can I enrol on a Study Programme?

Total People has three learning sites in Cheshire where Study Programmes take place:

  • Chester
  • Crewe
  • Macclesfield

What does a Study Programme involve?

Total People’s new look Study Programmes include four key areas of study:

  1. BTEC Introduction to Vocational Studies
  2. Maths & English
  3. Work Experience
  4. The Discovery Challenge - this area is about building wider skills such as confidence, teamwork and critical thinking.

Introduction to Vocational Studies

This involves learning about an area of industry where you may want to gain some work experience in. We offer the following vocational studies choices:

  • Art & Design
  • Business
  • Caring for Children
  • Construction
  • Health & Social Care
  • Hospitality & Tourism
  • Public Services

Maths & English

This part of the programme involves studying functional skills in maths and English – building the foundation you will need to apply for jobs.

Work Experience

The work experience part of the programme is made of four different steps that include:

  • an internal placement within Total People
  • ‘Behind the Scenes’ group visits
  • volunteering in the community
  • a work placement with a local employer

The Discovery Challenge

Brand new and exclusive to Total People, our Discovery Challenge focuses on building your personal development skills and improving your social skills. This will involve a range of activities that will focus on things such as Culture, Teamwork, The Environment, Community and Progression.

How much does a Study Programme cost?

Study Programmes are free to enrol on if you meet the Total People eligibility requirements.

Is there any additional support with funding and travel?

Yes, depending on your circumstances or if your family receives benefits, you may be able to apply for a bursary or receive free travel to the place of study. Please contact Total People to discuss your needs and we can advise you.

What to do if you do not meet the requirements to enrol on a BTEC Programme

If you do not meet the requirements for our BTEC, a Traineeship could be the next step.

A Traineeship is for young people who may have already done a Level 1, or have good GCSE results, but need some work experience to secure employment or an apprenticeship.

A Traineeship lasts up to six months and is work-based, giving the opportunity to build real work experience. In addition, a learning coach will help you to build on your employability and workplace skills.

When can I start?

We are accepting applications to enrol in winter 2019, and depending on your place of study, you may be able to start immediately.

Our next group intake will be in January 2020 and then September 2020.
