As the demand for skilled Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) maintenance technicians continues to outpace supply, transport and logistics businesses across Greater Manchester are feeling the pressure.

If the region is to meet its ambitious goal to be net zero carbon by 2038, outlined in the Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040, addressing this skills gap is imperative.

The scale of the problem

According to the Road Haulage Association (RHA), the UK faces a chronic shortage of qualified HGV technicians, with a ratio of one technician for every 31 HGVs. The RHA has called for greater flexibility within the new Growth and Skills Levy to allow logistics businesses to utilise funds effectively for workforce planning.

At the same time, the Greater Manchester Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) highlights a clear need for more training provision in green transport, sustainable technologies and electrification, all of which are transforming the vehicle maintenance landscape.

The right training is key

By investing in apprenticeships, employers can take a proactive role in developing in-house talent. Apprentices learn on the job while studying with expert tutors in our new, purpose-built automotive and engineering training facility in Wythenshawe, ensuring they gain both the practical experience and theoretical knowledge required to work on next-generation HGVs, including electric and hybrid models.

For example, the Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician programme trains apprentices in preventative maintenance and fault diagnostics, helping to reduce unplanned downtime, and ensuring that machinery and systems run efficiently.

In addition, the Level 3 Engineering and Maintenance Technician qualification will help you meet the demands of modern manufacturing and maintenance with apprentices trained in problem-solving and precision engineering skills.

Time to act

As the region works towards becoming a hub for green transport innovation, there’s never been a more urgent need to build capacity in HGV maintenance. Our apprenticeships ensure that your business will benefit from loyal, skilled technicians trained in line with your specific business needs.

Now is the time to equip your business for the road ahead.
