John Emsley, Employability and Engagement tutor at The Manchester College, is spreading the word that apprenticeships are for everyone after starting a Management apprenticeship with Total People.
John applied for the apprenticeship, advertised through the LTE Group, in order to pursue his goal of stepping into a management role.
Now, he’s managing a project with Manchester Cathedral, learning the theory of management and how to engage with stakeholders.
We sat down with John to ask him a few questions about how he benefited from the apprenticeship programme - here’s what he had to say.
Q1: What were you doing before you started your apprenticeship?
Before starting my apprenticeship, I was and still am, a tutor at Manchester College, where I have been for eight years. Prior to that, I spent ten years in the army and then fifteen years managing a resale and property company, before moving into the education sector.
Q2: How did you first learn about apprenticeships?
I learned about apprenticeships as part of my role working as a tutor within a further education establishment. A significant part of our work involves upskilling other people and exploring routes for them to enter the labour market, so I became aware of apprenticeship frameworks through this.
Q3: What motivated you to apply for an apprenticeship?
The LTE group advertised the opportunity for management apprenticeships about eighteen months ago. Although I'm not currently a manager, I had aspirations within my role.
So, I applied for the apprenticeship and was offered the opportunity. My daughter is also currently completing a degree-level apprenticeship, which also influenced my decision.
Q4: How has the apprenticeship impacted your role at work?
The apprenticeship has allowed us to grow certain areas in our department by providing autonomy to manage projects. For instance, I’ve been given the responsibility of managing a flagship project, which has enabled me to develop and grow the business aspect of our work.
Q5: What challenges do you think people face when starting an apprenticeship later in life?
There are outdated prejudices about the type of training offered by apprenticeships, as well as misconceptions that they’re not suitable for adults aspiring for senior level roles. Many employers expect younger applicants, which can be discouraging for older individuals considering an apprenticeship.
Q6: How did you apply for your apprenticeship, and what was the process like?
I applied through my employer when they advertised the opportunity eighteen months ago. I submitted a written statement explaining why I wanted to do it to my immediate manager.
I was accepted, and the apprenticeship in management started within a month. The process was very straightforward and easy!
Q7: What benefits have you gained from doing the apprenticeship?
Apart from enjoying the experience, I've had the opportunity to network with colleagues I wouldn't ordinarily meet. It has added credibility and value to my existing job.
Specifically, managing a project at Manchester Cathedral and engaging with various stakeholders and external organisations has been extremely beneficial.
Learning the theory of management has also been very useful and valuable for my role.
Q8: Why do you believe apprenticeships should be promoted to people of all ages?
From my perspective, the opportunity to participate in an apprenticeship myself has shown me the value they offer to people of all ages. Promoting apprenticeships can help dispel outdated prejudices and encourage more individuals, regardless of age, to enhance their skills and career prospects.
