Apprenticeships are a great way to earn while you learn.
Whether you’re straight out of school looking to learn on the job, or you’re already working but wanting to expand your current skills, apprenticeships can help you to launch or boost your dream career.
There are many reasons to start an apprenticeship, but what makes a great apprentice? We share the most common traits that show what employers are looking for and what makes a great apprentice.
Enthusiasm
Apprenticeships function just like regular jobs so bring your passion and enthusiasm to the role. Our advanced engineering apprentice, Benjamin Ross, explains how his work experience at a car mechanics workshop and DIY background led him to apply for an Advanced Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.
There might be a lot of new information to take on at the start of the apprenticeship. Don’t worry if you don’t understand something, our dedicated Learning Coaches are always available to help.
Willingness to learn
During apprenticeships, skills are developed by being around like-minded people who can share the latest skills and techniques of the trade. Apprentices get the opportunity to watch and learn from the best!
The most successful apprentices are those who have retained the knowledge they’ve learned and can show how to apply it in their current role. Our apprenticeships are programmes of learning designed with industry in mind, helping you towards a successful career and helping employers to future proof their businesses.
Communication
Whether it’s verbal, written or both, communication is an essential skill for employees in all industries. Apprentices have to communicate with many employees so being able to express your thoughts clearly and concisely is essential. As 20% of your learning will be ‘off-the-job’ either in a classroom environment or training centres like ours, you’ll need good communication to learn the theory behind practical skills.
A team player
Employers want to bring in people with the right attitude to help their businesses to grow, so make sure you show how you can fit right in. Apprentices can often become permanent team members or even the managers of tomorrow through upskilling, so be proactive, positive and ready to make the most of your apprenticeship.
