Are you passionate about shaping young minds and making a difference in children’s lives?
Early Years education is a challenging but rewarding career and there are several options to get started on this path. But which is best?
While traditional routes such as college or university are common pathways, apprenticeships offer a unique and practical alternative that come with significant advantages, which we explore here.
Earn while you learn
One of the standout benefits of an Early Years apprenticeship is the ability to earn a wage while you gain your nationally recognised qualification.
Unlike traditional educational routes where you may need to pay for tuition fees and other expenses, your apprenticeship training is funded by the government and your employer allowing you to gain hands-on experience in a real-world setting while receiving a regular income.
Gain practical experience
There is no substitute for experience. In other routes, you may be required to find your own work placements, whereas an Early Years apprenticeship provides high quality, on-the-job training, allowing you to work directly with children in nurseries and other childcare settings.
You’ll acquire practical skills from experienced professionals, gaining insights and techniques that you can’t get from classrooms and textbooks, giving you an edge in the job market.
Progression opportunities
Another advantage of an Early Years apprenticeship is the clear progression pathway it offers, whether you’re just starting out or looking to further your career.
- Early Years Practitioner (Level 2) – A 15-month programme (12-month practical period + 3-month End Point Assessment) at entry level. You’ll achieve the NCFE CACHE Level 2 Diploma and Early Years Practitioner Standard.
- Early Years Educator (Level 3) – A 21-month programme (18-month practical period + 3-month End Point Assessment) for staff already in Key Person roles (assigned to a specific child, serving as their primary point of contact) with knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
- Early Years Lead Practitioner (Level 5) – A 23-month programme (18-month practical period + 5-month End Point Assessment) designed for experienced staff. You’ll lead day-to-day practice at an operational level.
Make a difference
One of the most rewarding aspects of an Early Years apprenticeship is the immediate impact you can have on children’s lives. Working in a childcare setting from day one, you’ll help children learn, grow and develop, creating the foundation for their future success.
