About Childcare

A career in Childcare is very rewarding. It is also both demanding and fun and is a very responsible job. Working with children in their earliest years requires a great deal of patience and lots of energy. 

Excellent attendance, commitment and good communication skills are vital.  If you are a caring and nurturing person who enjoys meeting different people and you have a genuine interest in working with children then, this could be the ideal career for you.

Each working day in childcare will bring a variety of responsibilities, from supporting children with everyday care routines such as meal and rest times, to supporting or providing a wide range of interesting & stimulating indoor and outdoor activities to promote enjoyment and development.

We offer qualifications in both Childcare Early Years and Childcare Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools.

How do you get into Childcare?

If you are already employed in a Childcare setting then apply to Total People to enquire what qualifications you could start working towards.

If you do not currently have a job in Childcare then you can register your interest with Total People and our friendly Training Advisers will contact you to advise you of the different options available.

Before you can begin working with children you will need enhanced background checks by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) - formerly the Criminal Records Bureau. Again Total People will be able to give you advice to support with this.

Cost

This will be dependent on the size of the employer and if the employer is an apprenticeship levy payer. This can be discussed with Total People Ltd.  

Pathways to Apprenticeship - Level 1 (Childcare Early Years)

The Diploma in Caring for Children is a classroom based qualification. This course is ideal if you are 16-18 years old, not yet employed in a Childcare setting and eager to gain the knowledge and skills required to start a career in Childcare. 
You would attend training at one of Total People’s training sites 2 days per week to achieve the Diploma in Caring for Children and Functional Skills.

There are opportunities to progress into a Childcare placement and possibly a full Apprenticeship programme once you are job ready.

Entry Requirements:

No formal qualifications required

What qualifications will I gain?

  • Cache Level 1 Award, Certificate and Diploma in Caring for Children
  • Cache Level 1 Award in Personal and Social Development
  • Entry Level 3 Functional Skills - Maths, English and ICT 

Length of the course:

12 months

Intermediate Apprenticeship - Level 2 (Childcare Early Years)

What qualifications will I gain?

  • Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce (QCF)
  • Award in Employment Responsibilities and Rights in Children and Young People’s Settings
  • Level 1 Functional Skills - Maths, English and ICT
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Entry Requirements:

No formal qualifications are required but you will need to be job ready and have gained an employed Apprenticeship position in a Childcare setting.

Length of the course:

12 months
 

Advanced Apprenticeship - Level 3 (Childcare Early Years)

What qualifications will I gain?

  • Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (EYE)
  • Level 2 Award in Employment Responsibilities and Rights in Children and Young People’s Settings
  • Level 2 Functional Skills - Maths, English and ICT
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Entry Requirements:

To be employed in a Childcare setting, you will need to have gained experience in Childcare and have been given the responsibility of a key group of children.

Length of the course:

18 months
 

Pathways to Apprenticeship - Level 1 (Childcare Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools)

The Diploma in Caring for Children is a classroom based qualification. This course is ideal if you are 16-18 years old, not yet employed in an education setting and eager to gain the knowledge and skills required to start a career in education and inspiring children fulfil their potential. 

We offer a full time education course, an alternative to a traditional college environment. Attend training sessions in one of our many training centres. Benefit from smaller class sizes and extra support. Our study programme combines the occupational qualification – Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools with a high quality work placement and employability skills as well as maths and English training.

There are opportunities to progress into an education placement and possibly a full Apprenticeship programme once you are job ready.

Entry Requirements:

To undertake the Advanced Apprenticeship level 3, you need to have completed the prior level 2 qualification and have experience within a Supporting Teaching & learning role.
