To become a hairdresser or barber, you need to have good customer service skills. You’ll need creativity and an awareness of current trends. You’ll also need a willingness to learn new techniques and methods.
You can be employed in a variety of settings, from small salons to large enterprises with the ability to progress into an array of future opportunities (e.g. working on cruise ships, session work, TV and much more). These skills will stay with you forever and travel with you on your journey.

What you’ll be doing
Training and development takes place during this part of the apprenticeship, which includes a qualification.
The on programme learning for this apprenticeship is mainly through the on the job experience with a salon environment, focused on gaining the knowledge and demonstrating the skills in several core areas.
20% off the job is required and is covered with theory delivery, shadowing, mentoring and coaching at our sites and in the workplace.
Within the standard two distinct occupational routes are available:
Hairdressing:
As a hairdressing apprentice you'll be assisting senior staff while undertaking practical training to become a qualified hairdresser. Your main duties will include booking in consultations, shampooing, conditioning, cutting and styling clients hair, learning about how to apply different colour treatments and finishes as well as gaining foundations on specific techniques such as perms, extensions and relax.
Barbering:
As a barbering apprentice you'll be assisting senior staff while undertaking practical training to become a qualified barber. Your main duties will include booking in consultations, shampooing, conditioning, cutting and styling men's hair as well as learning specific shaving service techniques and facial hair cuts.
Mandatory qualification:
A Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals (Hairdressing/Barbering), is started in the on-programme stage, and completed at end-point assessment. In additional to completing all the on-programme assessment requirements for the Diploma for Hair Professionals (Hairdressing/Barbering), a range of core behaviours will also be developed.
These could include: a good awareness of health and safety, evidence of being able to work without supervision to a high level of precision, effective communication with colleagues and members of the public and an exceptional level of customer care.
Functional skills.
Apprentices without level 1 English and maths will need to achieve this level and take the test for level 2 English and maths prior to taking the end-point assessment
Gateway
Learners must have completed all the on-programme assessment requirements for the Diploma for Hair Professionals (Hairdressing/Barbering) and achieved the required level of English and maths before being put forward for the end-point assessment.
End point assessment
The end-point assessment demonstrates that the apprentice can perform in a fully competent, holistic and productive way.
The end-point assessment is carried out by an Independent Assessment Examiner, appointed by the assessment organisation, who will observe the learner carrying out a practical assessment of the mandatory skills set out in the Hair Professional standard.
The Independent Assessment Examiner will also ask questions while the practical assessment is taking place to ensure that the knowledge and behaviours contained within the Hair Professional standards are also assessed.
You will demonstrate that they can complete a range of services on at least two models to industry standards and within commercial timings.
Your consultation skills, communication skills, safe working practices, professionalism, values and behaviours will also be assessed by oral questioning.

Entry Requirements
In order to start a Hairdressing & Barbering Apprenticeship at either Level 2 or 3, you need to have a job or a placement in the industry as it is a work-based qualification.
Employers may look for specific qualifications, these are stated on each Apprenticeship Vacancy.
Cost
This will be dependent on the size of the employer and if the employer is an apprenticeship levy payer. This can be discussed with Total People Ltd.
Study Programme
Overview:
This programme in hairdressing or barbering is a classroom based qualification. This course is ideal if you are 16-18 years old, not yet employed in a hairdressing or barbering setting and eager to gain the knowledge and skills required to start a career in these sectors.
You would attend training at one of Total People’s training sites to achieve this qualification and Functional Skills. There are opportunities to progress into a full Apprenticeship programme upon completion.
