Overview

Switch Mobility (Optare Ltd) based in Sherburn in Elmet, Leeds have an exciting opportunity for a suitable candidate to join the Production team as an Apprentice to be trained up to a recognised level 3 qualification as a Bus and Coach Maintenance Technician.

About the apprenticeship

As a Bus and Coach Engineering Apprentice, you will play a key role in the manufacturing of both single deck and double deck buses. Always ensuring every task in the build process is completed to the highest quality standards, the role works within a continuous hand assembly process - working with relevant tools and machinery ensuring the production process continues to flow efficiently. This position will entail working within a production environment, working with tools and machinery and will give you a great opportunity to build a career in a highly specialised field.

You will be required to demonstrate a level of flexibility, have a positive attitude, with an ability to work well as part of a team. During the course of your apprenticeship, you will work towards completing these key tasks to a high standard with the aim of doing these with little to no support at the end of your learning period. * Undertaking tasks within the hand assembly production process to the highest quality standards.

Tasks you will learning and carrying include:

  • Measuring, marking out, cutting, assembly and building of parts
  • Interior fibreglass component fitment including dry fit, trimming, surface prep and bonding, fixing using a range of adhesives and mechanical fastenings
  • Vehicle glazing 
  • Interior plastic polymer (ABS) capping, coves and ceiling panel fitting
  • Measuring, marking out, surface prep and bonding
  • Passenger seat fitment
  • Working with engineering layout drawings, mechanically fixing seats into saloons
  • Final build activities including fitting exterior mirrors, legal labels, cab build, panel and bonnet alignment
  • To highlight any quality issues and be prepared to help with problem solving

Apprenticeship qualification and training

  • Level 3 Bus and Coach Engineering Technician
  • Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent in English and maths
  • Off-the-job training as directed
  • Block release training at Total People's Automotive facility - Wythenshawe Camput M22 9UH
