Functional Skills English and Maths Qualification

This course offers you the opportunity to develop your knowledge in English and maths and gain a nationally recognised qualification. 

Functional Skills are designed to develop and test English and maths skills that are used in everyday and work-related settings. They are designed to equip you with the skills that employers want. 

Course details 

We offer Functional Skills English and maths at either Level 1 or Level 2. To identify the most appropriate level, you will complete some assessments. These results, together with any prior achievement, will be used to identify the most appropriate level for each subject. 


is assessed by one exam with non-calculator and calculator sections. 


is assessed by two exams (one for reading and one for writing) and an assessment for speaking and listening that is completed with the Learning Coach. 

Course format 

This is an online course studied via distance learning with webinars delivered each week. To complete this course, you will need access to a computer and a basic level of IT knowledge. 

Studying via distance learning means you can choose when and where you study. A dedicated Learner Support Adviser provides you with support throughout the course. 

Who is suitable? 

This qualification would be ideal if you are aged 19 years or above and would like to improve your skills and knowledge in English and/or maths and achieve a recognised qualification. 

Full funding for this course is dependent upon age and prior achievement in English or maths.

You must meet one or more eligibility criteria that includes: 

  • Anyone aged 19 years or over
  • Living in Greater Manchester or in a Non-Devolved Authority region of England
  • Not already holding a Level 2 qualification in the subject to be studied
