Five steps to an apprenticeship:

First of all congratulations – you’ve made a brilliant decision. An apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to learn, earn, gain real experience and fantastic qualifications – all with no associated debt.

Now you’ve figured out what you’re going to do, let’s work on how you get there.

These five steps make the apprenticeship process simple.

1. Decide what you love

Really important – you’ll spend around a third of your waking life at work, make sure you enjoy it. What hobbies have you got? Could they be turned into work? Do you love working with your hands? Are you obsessed with digital technology? Do you love caring for people or animals? All of these things (and many more) could be translated into an apprenticeship.

2. Register your interest

Get onto the Total People website and register your interest – you’ll receive a weekly newsletter full of hints and tips and links to our brilliant job vacancies.

3. Apply for jobs

Keep applying! Applying for jobs is hard work. You might have applied for one or several and you might not have heard anything. Don’t worry, this is perfectly normal and the chances are you’ll need to be persistent and resilient until you get your dream role. Keep trying and don’t give up! Applying for an apprenticeship isn’t the same as applying for college – you aren’t guaranteed a place and the apprenticeship very much depends on you being employed. You’re not alone though, our dedicated recruitment and engagement team are here to help you every step of the way.

4. Get an interview

The thought of a job interview can be scary – the first and most important thing to remember though is that your potential employer REALLY wants you to be right for the job. The interview isn’t designed to catch you out, it’s designed for you to showcase your brilliance, and with the right preparation and a small amount of research, you’ll be able to approach any interview in a calm, relaxed way and massively improve your chances of landing your dream job. 5. Day one

The skills you’ll learn and the qualifications you’ll gain will set you up for life and open up a whole world of possibilities!
