Motor Vehicle Learner Case Study – Mark Petch

Young mechanic apprentice
Apprenticeships General News Technical Trades Case Studies

After leaving high school, Mark wasn’t exactly sure what he wanted to do in life but he had always enjoyed messing around with cars and started making steps towards becoming a motor vehicle mechanic.

“I had a couple of part-time jobs after I left school and helped out at my mates garage from time to time but it was the Youth Support Service (formerly Connexions) who suggested I look for Motor Vehicle Apprenticeships via the National Apprenticeships Service website.”

Completing a Level 1 Award in Motor Vehicle through the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) and being able to show that he had some experience with cars is the main reason, Mark believes, that he got taken on at FOW.

“There were a lot of applicants for this Apprenticeship but 9 out of 10 of them hadn’t got any previous experience or a Level 1 qualification which I am sure went in my favour when I applied here.”

Mark has completed numerous additional courses since starting his Apprenticeship including windscreen chip repair, air conditioning and Snap-On diagnostics – all of which have been paid for by FOW.

“I love it here – I can’t fault it. The staff are always really helpful and the company are always encouraging me to improve my skills, knowledge and understanding.”
