Early Years Lead Practitioner Apprenticeship

The Early Years Lead Practitioner (EYLP) is a proactive and highly skilled practitioner, that competently leads day-to-day practice at an organisational level but is still directly involved with the children. As a highly skilled practitioner they are influential in the delivery of the care, learning and development of young children, adapting practice to meet individual needs providing an  inclusive and holistic provision.

The EYLP will interact with children aged 0-8 years and will typically be responsible for leading other practitioners and aspects such as communication, language, planning and assessment, forest school, physical activity and nutrition while reporting directly to the setting lead.

Topics, units and assessments

As part of the apprenticeship, you will:

  • Promote children’s health, well-being, and resilience.
  • Support deep learning through playful interactions.
  • Oversee planning and assessments for development.
  • Ensure inclusion and support for all children.
  • Comply with safeguarding laws and policies.
  • Reflect and improve professional practice.
  • Maintain compliance with Health and Safety policies.
  • Keep accurate records and reports.
  • Lead and manage within your designated area.

Before entering the gateway, you must have been successful in completing all knowledge, skills, behaviours and duties, linked to the standard. The following must also be completed:

  • Level 2 Functional Skills English and maths or equivalent
  • A portfolio of evidence to underpin the Professional Discussion
  • Completion of the Case Study Scope and title document for approval.

How you’ll learn

Apprentices must complete a minimum of 6 hours per week of off-the-job training or the equivalent over the practical learning duration (20% of capped 30 working hours).

Off-the-job training must deliver new skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to the apprenticeship standard and can include:

  • Teaching of theory via blended delivery methods
  • Practical training
  • Work shadowing
  • Supported learning and time spent writing any
  • assignments/questions.
  • Assistant/Deputy Manager

    An Assistant/Deputy Manager supports the Manager in overseeing the daily operations a childcare facility. They help supervise staff, ensure the provision of high-quality care and education and assist with planning and implementing activities for children.

  • Lead Practitioner

    A Lead Practitioner is responsible for ensuring high-quality care and education for children, while mentoring and supporting the staff team. They oversee planning, observations, and assessments to promote children’s holistic development and learning.

  • Education Welfare Officer

    An Education Welfare Officer works to ensure that children attend school regularly and have access to education. They support students, families, and schools in addressing barriers to attendance, such as truancy, family issues, or mental health challenges.

  • Health Play Specialist

    A Health Play Specialist uses therapeutic play techniques to support the emotional and developmental needs of children in healthcare settings. They help children understand and cope with medical procedures, reducing fear and anxiety through activities.

  • Develop Skilled and Knowledgeable Professionals

    Through the hands on experience gained, apprentices can immediately add value to business practices. During the apprenticeship, learners  create engaging learning environments, support early communication and social skills.
