A career in Early Years is truly rewarding. As an Early Years Practitioner or an Early Years Educator, you’ll be responsible for the care, welfare and education of very young children.
You’ll be helping to shape a child’s future by building caring and nurturing relationships to help them feel secure, confident and independent.
You’ll be responsible for planning and providing play activities to help young children’s development and learning, and to help them to become ready for school.
You’ll need good communication skills and be able to work as part of a team. You’ll need to be caring and nurturing, as well as patient and understanding as you could be working with children from birth to end of Reception year. .

As an Early Years Educator, you will:
- Plan and supervise child initiated and adult led activities which are based around the needs and interests of each individual child
- Support children to develop numeracy and language skills through games and play
- Have key person responsibility to help ensure each child feels safe and secure
- Observe each child and shape their learning experience, reflecting their observations and assessments
- Meet the care needs of the individual child such as feeding, changing nappies and administration of medicine
- Work in partnership with other colleagues, parents and/or carers or other professionals to meet the individual needs of each child
With additional experience, an Early Years Educator can become the manager of an early years setting.

Teaching Assistants work in Primary, Special and Secondary education across all age ranges encompassing special educational needs and emotional vulnerabilities. The primary role of the Teaching Assistant is to support the class teacher to enhance pupils’ learning either in groups or individually, ensuring pupils understand the work set, know their learning objectives and stay on task in order to make progress.

Learning Mentors support the development of learners’ knowledge, skills and behaviours, and apply theoretical learning in work environments, either to individual learners or to groups of learners. They give practical, technical and pastoral support and guidance.
On this programme you’ll learn:
- Functional Skills Level 2 in maths and English
- Functional Skills Level 2 in ICT
- Safeguarding Level 1
- End Point Assessment

Entry Requirements
- Employers may set any entry requirements which may include:
- a strong desire to support learners
- a qualification in your chosen specialism
- recent experience and knowledge relevant to the role
- Maths, English and ICT skills at Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE Grade C or above).You’ll have to gain these before you take your End Point Assessment.

Assessor Coach Level 4

With our Level 4 Assessor Coach apprenticeship, you’ll gain industry recognised skills. In addition to learning ‘on the job’ you’ll also learn how to assess and coach through a series of online learning sessions.
You’ll have a dedicated Total People Learning Coach who will help you to develop the key skills you’ll need to progress.
You’ll be working towards a recognised and valued qualification which will allow you to move on to further learning if you wish.
On this programme you’ll learn:
- Functional Skills Level 2 in maths and English
- Functional Skills Level 2 in ICT

Individual employers may set any entry requirements which may include:
- a qualification and up-to-date experience in your chosen specialism
- Maths, English and ICT skills at Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE Grade C or above). You’ll have to gain these before you take your End Point Assessment.

Skills Teacher Standard – Level 5

Overview
This is a 24-month programme (excluding gateway) and includes a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training. The Learning and Skills Teacher is ‘dual-professional’, having first achieved in their chosen specialism and then trained as a teacher.
LSTs (Learning and Skills Teachers) plan and deliver learning that is current, relevant, challenging, and that inspires learners to achieve their full potential. LSTs collaborate closely with colleagues to support learner progress and ensure learner wellbeing.
On this programme you’ll learn:
- knowledge, skills and behaviours to work as a skills teacher in further education
- Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training
- Level 2 NCFE / CACHE Certificate in Understanding Safeguarding and Prevention
- Functional Skills English, maths and ICT L2, if needed
You’ll also gain
100 hours teaching practice minimum (classroom or workshop delivery with groups)
