The childcare apprentice explains his apprenticeship journey so far.

We spoke to Total People apprentice Dillon Slater, a nursery practitioner at The Village Nursery in Trafford Park, about his Level 3 Childcare apprenticeship and his career ambitions.

How did you find your apprenticeship with Total People?

I met Rebecca Moore, Operations Manager, from The Village Nursery Group, at a jobs fair where we discussed the possibility of an apprenticeship.

What do you do in work as part of your apprenticeship and what skills have you learned?

I look after children and plan activities for them. I cater to their individual needs but also speak to parents and work alongside my colleagues. I’m learning a wide range of skills whilst completing my apprenticeship such as how to change a nappy properly and how to cater to children with dietary requirements.

What help and support have you received from Total People?

My tutor has massively helped me through my qualification by encouraging me and giving me motivation. I’m most proud of completing my Level 2 and have now moved on to Level 3.

What are your career goals?

I still don’t know what I want to do as a career but I plan on continuing my experience in childcare after completing my qualifications. My apprenticeship has helped me to see that the career I choose will be based around childcare.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship and what would you say to someone looking to apply?

I would recommend it because I think it gives you better prepared for life in the future. I would say to someone looking to apply to be ready to get your head down and work hard!
