If you love the idea of working with animals, then an Apprenticeship in Animal Care could be the route for you!

Working in the animal care industry means being responsible for the general welfare, supervision of animals. You may want to consider a job in the industry that has been described as both exciting and rewarding.

There are a diverse range of establishments such as; boarding kennels, day kennels, catteries, petting farms and pet shops. Whatever type of company you work for they will always require services for the care of their animals.

During the Apprenticeship you will cover areas such as:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Promote and maintain the health and well-being of animals
  • Deliver basic treatments to animals
  • Select and prepare accommodation for animals
  • Moving animals between locations
  • Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety

How do you get into the Industry?

In order to start an Animal Care Apprenticeship at either Level 2 or 3, you need to have a job in the industry as this is a work-based qualification.
You do not always need academic qualifications to start training working in Animal Care. However, some employers may prefer you to have a good standard of general Education such as GCSEs, including English and maths.

The Animal Care Apprenticeship can lead to a variety of career and promotional opportunities including:

  • Animal Care level 3 (dependant on job role)

  • Retail

Entry Requirements

To start Pathways to Apprenticeship Level 1 course, you do not need any particular formal qualifications.

In order to start an Animal Care Apprenticeship at either Level 2 or 3, you need to have a job in the industry as it is a work-based qualification.

You do not always need academic qualifications to start training for a career with animals. However, some employers may prefer you to have a good standard of general Education such as GCSEs, including English and maths.

Cost

This will be dependent on the size of the employer and if the employer is an apprenticeship levy payer. This can be discussed with Total People Ltd.

Pathways to Apprenticeship - Level 1

Overview:

Total People will support you to experience a working environment with a local company for between 12 and 30 hours a week, in order to give you an insight into the Animal Care sector. This will involve some practical experience in an animal focussed setting, along with support at one of our centres or on a one to one basis. At the end of the course, you could progress onto a full Apprenticeship with Total People.

What qualifications will I gain?

  • Level 1 Diploma in Work-Based Horse Care
  • Employability Awards and First Aid at Work Certificate
  • Support with Maths and English

Length of the course:

12 months approximately

​Intermediate Apprenticeship - Level 2

What qualifications will I gain?

  • Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care and Welfare/ Dog Grooming / Pet Care and Retail (depending on your job role)
  • Functional Skills Maths Level 1 /  upskill to level 2
  • Functional Skills English Level 1 /  upskill to level 2
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning & Thinking Skills

Entry Requirements:

GCSEs in English and maths

Length of the course:

18/20 months approximately

Advanced Apprenticeship - Level 3

What qualifications will I gain?    

  • Level 3 Diploma in Animal Care and Welfare/ Dog Grooming / Pet Care and Retail (depending on your job role)
  • Functional Skills Maths Level 2
  • Functional Skills English Level 2
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning & Thinking Skills

Entry Requirements:

GCSEs in English and maths

Length of the course:

20/24 months approximately
