Bricklaying
If you want a varied job that makes good use of your practical skills and takes you out and about, a bricklaying apprenticeship could be perfect for you.
You will need to be good at solving problems, have the ability to follow technical plans, and understand the importance of health and safety. You’ll also need good customer care skills.
During the Bricklaying Apprenticeship you will cover areas such as:
- Erecting masonry structures in the workplace
- Setting out masonry structures in the workplace
- Stack and store resources
- Conform to workplace safety
- Conform to efficient working practices
How do you get into the industry?
There are no specific grades needed to start a career in bricklaying, however, many employers look for people that enjoy working “hands-on”.
Any previous practical qualifications such as Engineering or Design and Technology, or experience would be a benefit when applying for positions in the construction industry.
Further Progression
After completing your Apprenticeship in bricklaying, you will be able to progress onto further qualifications or promoted to higher positions including supervisor and managerial.

Entry Requirements
In order to start a Construction Apprenticeship at Level 1, you will not need to have any formal qualifications or be working within the industry. This is an entry level and therefore will prepare you for a full Apprenticeship.
To start an Apprenticeship in Construction at either Level 2 or 3, you need to have a job or a placement in the industry as it is a work-based qualification.
You do not always need academic qualifications to start training for a career in Construction. However, some employers may prefer you to have a good standard of general Education such as GCSEs, including English and maths.
Cost
This will be dependent on the size of the employer and if the employer is an apprenticeship levy payer. This can be discussed with Total People Ltd.
Pathways to Apprenticeship – Level 1 in Bricklaying
A pathway in Bricklaying or Carpentry and Joinery gives you an insight into the Construction sector. At the end of the course there may be an opportunity to progress onto a full Apprenticeship programme with Total People.
- Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying
- Functional Skills in Maths and English
Length of course: 8–9 months approximately
Intermediate Apprenticeship - Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying
- Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying
- Functional Skills Level 1 or 2 in Maths and English
- Functional Skills Level 1 or 2 in ICT if required as part of the framework
- Employment Rights and Responsibilities
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
Length of Course: 24 months
Advanced Apprenticeship - Level 3 Diploma in Bricklaying
- Level 3 Diploma in Bricklaying
- Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English
- Functional Skills Level 2 in ICT if required as part of the framework

- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
