Katie Roberts, a telecoms apprentice at Beaconplus tells us how starting an apprenticeship has been a good decision for both her and her career.

What made you want to be an apprentice?

“I’ve always enjoyed working and not like being in a classroom. I prefer learning with a hands-on approach, therefore learning on the job.”

What is it like to earn and learn?

“The best thing I ever did. A lot of my friends went to college on a course earning no money. Whereas I am learning and gaining a qualification whilst earning money.”

How did it feel on your first day?

 “I was very nervous, however, everyone made me feel very welcome and my nerves disappeared.”

What has the support been like from Total People?

 “Great!  Any questions I have, I email our training advisor and he helps out.”

How have you enjoyed working at Beaconplus? 

 “I enjoy working with our team and everyone gets on really well, which I think is great!”

What have been some of your highlights so far?

 “Gaining skills on jobs which I never thought I’d be able to do.  I also enjoy our staff nights out.”

How does it feel to be supporting the next generation of apprentices in your workplace?

 “I would always recommend going for an apprenticeship over university and college.  You’re getting real hands-on experience which employers look for.”
