Tangerine was founded fifteen years ago to prove that PR could be both ethical and profitable, and four years ago – when the digital media sector was growing exponentially – a not-for-profit arm, The Juice Academy, was created to plug the ever expanding skills gap and provide training and quality jobs for young people in the industry.
Sandy Lindsay MBE, founder and chair of both Tangerine and The Juice Academy, explains why her personal commitment to work-based learning has worked so well:
“When we first identified the need to create our own in-house training arm we contacted the National Apprenticeship Service who recommended Total People. We now work in partnership as a sub-contractor; all of our training is delivered at The Juice Academy by our own practising specialists – this is crucial; the very nature of the industry means that it changes daily and we need to remain relevant and responsive to that change – and Total People do all of our assessment, pastoral care and paperwork. It’s an excellent relationship and we’ve found a real balance by working together.
“In addition to providing training to around 200 young people since our launch, placing them with leading employers across the North West, we also have our own in-house apprentices, which have proved critical in terms of diversity for the business. Our apprentices provide an authentic voice and a unique perspective to our brands, something that has almost been a by-product to the apprenticeship scheme but one which has provided a real boost.
“It’s also tremendous to see the progression of our apprentices; some of the young people who started on programme with us four years’ ago are now tutors themselves, training the next generation of apprentices – a fantastic testament to how well the programme works.
“Growing our own talent has been an enormous asset – it may sound like a cliché but our young people really are a breath of fresh air. In comms we need people who are eager, enthusiastic and creative, and that certainly describes our apprentices. They bring such a lot to the company and add real value – I’d recommended the apprenticeship route without hesitation.”
