Hear from our apprentices
If you're considering an Apprenticeship, but not sure if it's for you or not, don't just take our word for it, hear from our apprentices. Today we are delighted to share Molly's experience and what she loves about being an apprentice.
What made you want to be an apprentice?
Initially, I was planning to go to university to study Sociology after I finished my A Levels. During my time at college, apprenticeships weren’t that well promoted and most people were encouraged that in order to get a good job, you needed to go to university and get a degree. I decided quite late on that actually, I didn’t want to go to university but I wanted to get work experience instead, so my parents suggested an apprenticeship, that way I could earn money whilst I learned!
What’s your job title?
What was your first day like?
My first day working at TSS was exciting and nerve-racking, however, as soon as I arrived, I was met by my manager and she introduced me to everyone. All of the staff were so friendly and welcoming which definitely helped to settle the nerves. My manager completed my induction and gave me a rundown of what my role would involve, after this is, I got stuck into completing some market research.
Tell us about a day in the life as an apprentice.
This question is hard to answer because really, in my role, every day is different. Because of the nature of my role and working in transport, every day there is something different going on. One day I may be working on a marketing campaign, another I may be overseeing the commercial transport bookings and others I may be producing the roadside bus timetables. That’s one of the things I enjoy about my job, the fact it is diverse and no day is the same!
What’s it like to earn and learn?
Having the ability to earn money whilst studying for a qualification is amazing, you really do get the best of both worlds. Earning money means you get more freedom to do the things you want in your spare time; however, it also teaches the responsibility of managing money and budgeting. Learning on the job is great too because not only am I learning the theoretical side of my role but I get to demonstrate these skills on a daily basis.
What has the support been like from the team at Total People?
The support from Total People has been great; my training advisor is really supportive and will always help whenever I need it. I have also had some one-to-one ICT exam prep sessions with another training advisor and this has helped my confidence grow vastly in readiness for my exam.
What have been the highlights so far?
I would say that one of the main highlights during my apprenticeship was being nominated for South Cheshire Chamber’s Apprentice of the Year award and being shortlisted as one of three finalists. It was an honour to be nominated for such a prestigious award and to reach the final was an amazing achievement and one I’ll never forget.
How do you feel an apprenticeship has benefitted you, both personally and professionally?
My apprenticeship has made me so much more confident both personally and professionally, it has equipped me with skills that I can use throughout my working life. In short, I would say that I’d never look back!
What’s your five-year plan?
I want to continue progressing within TSS and would aspire to develop to the position of Marketing Manager as I’d like to be responsible for a marketing budget and be able to showcase my creative nature. I want to promote apprenticeships to young people in the local area and would love to manage my own apprentice one day and help them develop within their studies as I have through mine.
What would you say to someone thinking about becoming an apprentice?
I would definitely consider an apprenticeship, 100%. Don’t feel like there is a huge pressure to go to university just because it is promoted so heavily. For some jobs, they do require you to go to university to gain a degree however for most careers, an apprenticeship can be the best option because you are obtaining valuable work experience that every employer looks for whilst gaining a qualification too!
