Sodexo Astra Zeneca apprentice Sara Pearson-Bromley describes her apprenticeship journey...

The value of the apprenticeship route was already clear to Sara Pearson-Bromley; having completed programmes in both Health & Social Care and Practical Cookery, she had no doubts that becoming an apprentice engineer was the right move.

“Having already completed apprenticeships I knew that the combination of working and earning has major benefits,” explains Sara. “So when I decided to develop my skills and become an engineer, I knew an apprenticeship would be the right fit”.

Employed as an apprentice Maintenance Assistant at Sodexo Astra Zeneca in Macclesfield, Sara is completing an Engineering Operative standard at Level 2.

“It’s very variable and every day is different,” says Sara. “Today I’m carrying out portable appliance testing, and tomorrow I could be servicing scientific instruments or taking HVAC readings – because every day is different it means that it’s enjoyable, and I definitely don’t get bored”.

Since starting on the programme at the end of October Sara has learned many practical skills, and enjoys applying the theory that she learns at Total People’s Engineering Workshop into the workplace.

“I really enjoy the practical experience in the workshops,” explains Sara,

and I’m gaining both Electrical and Mechanical unit skills and knowledge, along with CAD drawing. All of this will help with my eventual goal of becoming a Site Technician in my area.

Sara is progressing well through the apprenticeships and has already completed some of the learning ahead of schedule. She explains more; “I’ve had lots of support, especially from my Learning Coach, and have already overtaken some of the people on programme who started before me. I’d recommend the apprenticeship route to anyone; I’d just say take your time to work out what you want to do and research it. You learn more when you’re hands on – plus you earn money!”
