Carpentry and Joinery Overview
If you want a varied job that makes good use of your practical skills and takes you out and about, carpentry and joinery could be perfect for you.
You’ll need to be good at solving problems, be able to follow technical plans and understand the importance of health and safety. You’ll also need good customer care skills.
During the apprenticeship you’ll cover areas such as:
- installing first fixing components (installing windows, doorframes, linings, floorboards, erecting partitions, plaster boarding and joinery tasks prior to plasterwork except structural components)
- installing second fix components (installing kitchens, boxing in pipes, hanging doors, cutting and fitting skirting and architraves)
- Stacking and storing resources
- workplace safety
- efficient working practices.
How do you get into the industry?
There are no specific grades needed to start a career in carpentry and joinery, however many employers look for people that enjoy ‘hands-on' working.
To start an apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery at either Level 2 or 3, you’ll need to have a job or a placement in the industry to gain the experience and knowledge needed in the workplace
You don’t always need academic qualifications to start training, but some employers may prefer you to have a good standard of education, such as GCSEs, as well as English and maths.
Further Progression
After completing your apprenticeship in any of the Construction Trades, you may be able to gain further qualifications or apply for higher level positions including supervisor and manager.

What you’ll be doing
