About Dental Nursing

The qualification that we offer is called the Integrated Dental Standard Level 3.

The role of a Dental Nurse is varied. Primarily a dental nurse provides chair side support for the clinical team.
The team includes dentists, hygienists/therapists, clinical dental technicians and administration staff. 

Dental Nurses can be employed in general practice, hospitals or the community dental services and can also train as a Dental Nurse in the armed forces. 

What you'll be doing 

During the Apprenticeship you will cover areas such as: 

  • The impact of health and safety legislation on working practices in the dental setting
  • Prevention and control of infection in the dental setting
  • Dental and regional anatomy, oral health assessments and treatment planning
  • Recognising and supporting actions during first aid and medical emergencies
  • The safe use of ionising radiation to produce quality radiographic images
  • Provide support for the control of periodontal disease and caries, and the restoration of cavities
  • Provide support during the stages of prosthetic treatments
  • Provide support during the stages of endodontic procedures
  • Provide support during extractions and minor oral surgery
  • Scientific and practical information to support 
  • The patients oral health & physical health.

How do you get into the industry? 

To complete the Integrated Dental Standard Level 3, you must have GCSE English and maths at grade C/4 or above.

You will also be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS Check). 

Like all Apprenticeships, in order to start  the Integrated Dental Standard Level 3, you need to have a job or a placement in the industry as it is a work-based qualification.

  • Oral Health Education 
  • Combined Diploma in Hygiene Therapy

End Point Assessment (EPA) 

An EPA has to be undertaken to pass the Integrated Dental Standard Level 3. The EPA must be assessed by a different organisation than the one delivering the training. 

The EPA consists of: 

1.    Multiple Choice Exam
2.    Practice Observation
3.    Interview

Apprentice is graded a Distinction, Pass or Fail.
