About Dental Nursing

The role of a Dental Nurse is varied. Primarily a dental nurse provides chair side support for the clinical team.  The team includes dentists, hygienists/therapists, clinical dental technicians and administration staff. 

Dental Nurses can be employed in general practice, hospitals or the community dental services and can also train as a Dental Nurse in the armed forces. 

What you'll be doing 

During the Apprenticeship you will cover areas such as: 

  • Health and Safety 
  • Roles and Responsibilities of a Dental Nurse 
  • First Aid Essentials 
  • Preparation and maintenance of the environments, instruments, and equipment for the clinical dental procedure 
  • Oral Health Education 
  • Radiography 
  • Dental Caries, Periodontal Disease 
  • Crowns, Bridges and Dentures 
  • Cross Infection Control 

How do you get into the industry? 

There are no minimum levels of entry: however, some employers may prefer you to have a good standard of general education such as GCSE’s in Maths and English. You will also be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS Check). 

Like all Apprenticeships, in order to start a Dental Nursing Apprenticeship, you need to have a job or a placement in the industry as it is a work-based qualification.

Overview

To start a Dental Nursing Apprenticeship, you need to have a job or a placement in the industry as it is a work-based qualification. 

There are many places that you can go to find a job; the Total People Website, the Apprenticeship Vacancies Website, local papers, Internet job sites and the Job Centre Plus.

  • Functional Skills Maths Level 2

  • Unit 305 - Principles of Infection Control in the Dental Environment 
  • Unit 313 - Assessment of Oral Health and Treatment Planning 
  • Unit 314 - Dental Radiography     
  • Unit 315 - Management of Oral Health Disease and Dental Procedures 
End Point Assessment (EPA) 

An EPA has to be undertaken to pass the Dental Nurse Apprenticeship standard. The EPA must be assessed by a different organisation than the one delivering the training. 

The EPA consists of: 

(75%) A 2000-3000 word project which demonstrates the skills, knowledge and behaviours required for a dental nurse. The project will be based on a theme that is relevant to the dental practice. 

(25%) An interview (structured discussion) between the apprentice and the EPA centre focussing on the project results and how they have performed during the apprenticeship. 

Apprentice is graded a Distinction, Pass or Fail.
