What is Dental Nursing?

The role of a Dental Nurse is varied. Primarily a dental nurse provides chair side support for the clinical team including dentists, hygienists/therapists, clinical dental technicians and administration staff.  

Dental nurses are responsible for maintaining high health and safety standards by decontaminating equipment during and after procedures as well as looking after the patients. 

Dental Nurses can be employed in general practice, hospitals or the community dental services and can also train as a Dental Nurse in the armed forces. 

About the Dental Nursing Apprenticeship

The apprenticeship that we offer is called the Integrated Dental Standard Level 3. This is an advanced Dental Nursing apprenticeship lasting approximately 21 months that will help you develop the skills you need to kickstart your career and learn from those with vast experience in dentistry.  

What you'll do as a Dental Nurse apprentice 

During the Dental Nursing Apprenticeship you will cover areas such as:  

  • The impact of health and safety legislation on working practices in the dental setting 

  • Prevention and control of infection in the dental setting 

  • Dental and regional anatomy, oral health assessments and treatment planning 

  • Recognising and supporting actions during first aid and medical emergencies 

  • The safe use of ionising radiation to produce quality radiographic images 

This training will enable you to: 

  • Provide support for the control of periodontal disease and caries, and the restoration of cavities 

  • Provide support during the stages of prosthetic treatments 

  • Provide support during the stages of endodontic procedures 

  • Provide support during extractions and minor oral surgery 

Dental Nursing Apprenticeship Requirements  

To complete the Integrated Dental Standard Level 3 Apprenticeship, you must have GCSE English and maths at grade C/4 or above. 

You will also be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS Check).  

Like all Apprenticeships, in order to start the Integrated Dental Standard Level 3, you need to have a job or a placement in the industry as it is a work-based qualification.

End Point Assessment (EPA) 

An EPA has to be undertaken to pass the Integrated Dental Standard Level 3. The EPA must be assessed by a different organisation than the one delivering the training. 

The EPA consists of: 

1.    Multiple Choice Exam
2.    Practice Observation
3.    Interview

Apprentice is graded a Distinction, Pass or Fail.

Length of the course:

21 months Approximately
