Recognising Experience, Unlocking Potential: Upskilling Your Conveyancing Team

Employers Professional Services Blogs

For many conveyancing firms, some of the most valuable people are those who have learned on the job. They know the processes, understand clients, and keep transactions moving. But without a formal qualification, progression can sometimes be limited.

That is starting to change. The Professional Experience Exemption route from the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) offers a new way to recognise the expertise teams already have, while creating a clear pathway to qualification.

For employers, this is more than a qualification route. It is an opportunity to upskill your workforce, strengthen your team, and plan for long term growth in a sector where skilled professionals are in high demand.

What is the Professional Experience Exemption route?

The Professional Experience Exemption allows experienced conveyancing professionals with no formal legal qualifications to bypass the Level 4 Diploma and progress directly to the Level 6 qualification.

Importantly, learners still complete the Level 6 qualification and assessments, so standards remain the same. The difference is that their experience is recognised, helping them qualify more efficiently.

To be eligible, individuals typically need at least four years of continuous experience as a conveyancing fee earner, must be working in a legal setting and be supervised by a qualified professional.

Why this matters for employers

The conveyancing sector continues to face challenges around capacity and access to qualified professionals. This route gives you a practical way to address those challenges internally.

Instead of relying solely on recruitment, you can develop the capability that already exists within your team. This helps retain staff, build loyalty and create clear progression pathways.
