Why should joiners use apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships Employers Blogs

There are lots of people looking to kick-start their career in joinery through an apprenticeship due to its great combination of training and hands-on experience.

But what are the benefits to joiners taking on those apprentices?

Bridge skills gaps within your company

Joinery apprenticeships are a brilliant way to fill skills gaps among existing employees. While apprentices are trained across all areas, as an employer you can focus your apprentice’s practical experience to where your business needs it the most. This will ensure that you can deliver a full range of services to meet your client’s requests.

Oversee practical skills development

With something as practical as carpentry and joinery, employers often feel more comfortable seeing exactly what an employee can do to ensure they are meeting the highest of standards. Since an apprentice will get their training with you, you’ll have a hand in shaping how they work, what skills they develop and the quality of the work they deliver.

Cost-efficient employees

Depending on the size of your business, you could take on a joinery apprentice at little to no cost to yourself. In a company with less than 50 employees, apprentices aged 16-18 are eligible for 100% funding. Apprentices aged 19+, or 16+ in a company with more than 50 employees, are eligible for 95% funding.

This is just one of the reasons taking on apprentices is a great way to grow your business while also shaping the next generation of workers.

Future proof your business

A large percentage of construction workers are aged 45 or older and many looking to retire over the next two decades. It is therefore essential for your long term business success to bring young people into the sector through training and job opportunities. This will ensure that your business can continue to deliver joinery services even when your existing employees retire.
