Melanie Nicholson, Total People Managing Director, explains the benefits that traineeships can bring for both learners and employers.

As we learn to live in a COVID-19 world, we have to look towards a brighter future. Many young people have faced learning and employment challenges over the past few months due to the pandemic. What we need now is a focus on ways to bring both learners and employers together, and one way to do this is through traineeships.

Traineeships give young people aged 16 to 24 year olds a great start to their career and allow them to gain the essential skills that employers are looking for before going on to an apprenticeship or employment.

Funded by the government, traineeships combine work experience and study and provide a taste of the workplace while also allowing trainees to develop their employability skills, such as CV writing, interview preparation and improve their English, maths and digital skills along with sector based qualifications. In addition, it has been proven traineeships deliver results: last year, it was revealed 75 per cent of learners moved on to work or further study within a year of completing their programme.

The benefits of traineeships extend to businesses as well. Trainees can form the beginning of an organisation’s talent pipeline, they can help to increase capacity and productivity, and employers can get to know and work with young people prior to recruiting apprentices.  Employers who make new work placement opportunities available can receive an incentive payment of £1000 per learner for up to 10 learners. This means businesses will be helping to tackle youth unemployment and support economic recovery while developing their own talented workforce.

Total People are looking to work closely with trainees and employers to offer quality programmes, ensuring that trainees have the best possible start by gaining the correct knowledge levels and experience to aid them in their future development in their chosen career.

We have developed Traineeship programmes in a number of occupations and are currently engaging with employers and individuals to promote our offer.
