Apprentices get paid for their on-the-job training and college training days. Both days are a display of their dedication to the training programme, and employers must legally pay them for their compulsory training days.

How many college days do apprentices have?

The amount of formal training days may vary depending on the type of apprenticeship, however, apprenticeship programmes typically follow the 80-20 ratio.

  • 80% On-the-Job Working: This refers to the hands-on work experience and practical training that apprentices receive while working directly in their chosen profession.
  • 20% ‘Off the job’ Training : This portion includes coursework, workshops and college days. College days or classroom instruction fall under this 20% category. It is typically recommended for apprentices to spend one day a week (20% of their time) working on coursework. 

Who is responsible for an apprentices wage?

The responsibility for an apprentice's salary typically lies with the employer. Employers are responsible for compensating apprentices for the work they perform during their apprenticeship. 

The wage or salary is a crucial aspect of the apprenticeship agreement and is meant to reflect a fair compensation for the apprentice's labour.

How much do apprentices get paid?

An apprentice pay is based on the National Minimum Wage, with different rates depending on your age and the year of your apprenticeship:

  • Aged 16 to 18: £5.28 per hour.
  • Aged 19 or over and in your first year: £5.28 per hour.
  • Aged 19 or over and have completed your first year: You’re entitled to the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage rate for your age.
  • An employer may wish to pay an apprentice more than the minimum wage at their own discretion. 

In addition to apprenticeship minimum wage, apprentices are entitled to dedicated time for training or study as part of their apprenticeship, paid holidays, and other working rights.
