About the apprenticeship

The Chester Grosvenor  are now recruiting for three stars of tomorrow to join our chef brigade within our well established Simon Radley Kitchen Academy (SR Academy). The SR Academy nurtures young talent by offering ten apprenticeship places each year. Each place within the academy is highly sought after, so we ask that you are committed and passionate about becoming a chef, the rest we can will help you with!

It remains our long term goal to offer the next step from Apprentice Chef to Demi Chef de Partie to all successful apprentices graduating from the SR academy and where possible we make this happen. Our commitment to ‘Grow with Grosvenor’ has seen many apprentices become our head chefs and stars of the future, by marking out the path for many to follow. They earn their place by working their way up the career ladder and being rewarded and awarded for their successes along the way.

Chef Apprenticeship

To ensure that we have dedicated apprentices that are the stars of the future, each apprentice that is short listed will be interviewed and selected by Simon personally to join his team.

You will have the chance to earn while you learn alongside talented and innovative chefs.

The Commis Chef Apprenticeship is open to anyone from school leavers to those simply looking for a change in career. No previous experience is necessary, all we ask is for lots of enthusiasm, team spirit and the drive to succeed!

The length of the programme is 15 to 18 months. Learners have achieved level one or two in maths and English or must attend extra support to enable successful completion of the course, working towards a pass or distinction grading.

A range of skills and behaviours will be developed throughout the programme, using a variety of approaches both in and out of the kitchen environment.

Culinary skills– craft preparation, cooking skills and techniques to prepare, produce and present dishes and menu items in line with the business requirements, your journey will enable you to build the foundations of knowledge and flourish.

Food Safety –this is of paramount importance! You will understand all food safety requirements and the law regarding this within the kitchen. You will expand your knowledge with the importance of allergens, safe systems of work and safe work practices.

Menus– working with some of the finest ingredients and local produce available, you will quickly learn how seasonality fits into availability, quality and price of ingredients.

Offering a diverse and comprehensive apprenticeship, you will work 5 days across 7 within either the La Brasserie, Meetings & Events, Simon Radley or Pastry Kitchen.

-20% of your qualification will take place being mentored, shadowing and learning.

-Online profiles are set up to enable you to add photographs of your work, update your workbooks and build your portfolio as a commis chef at the same time as working towards completing your apprenticeship.

-Along your journey you will be undertaking professional discussions, multiple choice tests and culinary and practical observations to help you stay on track, with the final assessment called ‘EPA’ which we will ensure you are competent and confident to complete.

Future Prospects

  • Full in house training will be provided by Senior Chefs together with the standard in commis chef/production chef
  • The apprenticeship will include Functional Skills where needed
