About the apprenticeship
A career in auto paint repair comes with varied responsibilities. Auto Paint repairers must have the ability to determine which specific parts or pieces of a vehicle need to be repaired or replaced. Entry level auto paint repair personnel will not have the responsibility of providing estimates, but will be more involved in the manual labour of repairing a damaged vehicle. They will repair paint automotive bodies by planning repairs - repairing, replacing, and refinishing parts, maintaining tools and equipment and maintaining records.
Duties include:
- Commonly, auto body paint repairers will be required to remove damaged parts of the vehicle and replace them with repaired or new parts without damaging the surrounding area. Auto body paint repair also requires the use of a paint booth. In many cases, portions of a vehicle must be repainted to match the undamaged exterior of the vehicle
- Damage sustained to vehicles can sometimes be repaired without removal of the part or piece
- Refinishes body parts by mixing paints, matching colours, spray painting primer and finishing coats, applying touch-up paint
- Maintains quality service by following repair standards, correcting deficiencies, obtaining approval from the customer
- Maintains tools and equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventitive maintenance and calling for repairs
- Maintains supplies inventory by checking stock, anticipating needs, placing and expediting orders, verifying receipt
- Maintains a safe work environment by adhering to work standards and practices
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading manufacturers' specifications
- Enhances the organisation reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
- Auto body paint repair jobs require a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to the ever-changing automotive world
- Auto body paint repair workers are required to drive customer vehicles short distances to ensure that repairs are complete and the vehicle is suitably repaired
