About the apprenticeship
Duties and responsibilities will include:
- Entry level auto body repair personnel will not have the responsibility of providing estimates but will be more involved of the manual labour of repairing a damaged vehicle. They will Repair automotive bodies by planning repairs; repairing, replacing, and refinishing parts; maintaining tools and equipment; maintaining records
- Commonly, auto body repairers will be required to remove damaged parts of the vehicle and replace them with repaired or new parts without damaging surrounding area. Auto body repair also requires the use of a paint booth. In many cases, portions of a vehicle must be repainted to match the undamaged exterior of the vehicle
- You will Repair automotive bodies by removing, fabricating, attaching, and aligning parts; repairing dents; filling and sealing depressions; hammering, shaping, shrinking, expanding, filing, grinding, sanding, smoothing, and featheredging surfaces; applying repair techniques and tools, including, wrenches, cutting torch, dent puller, hand, pneumatic, and power tools, grinder, sander, welder, straightener, power, foot, and hand shear, brake, drill press, drills, etc.
- Damage sustained to vehicles can sometimes be repaired without removal of the part or piece. Auto body repair personnel will implement the use of various tools and supplies to assist in removing dents and dings. Knowledge of hand-tools and computerised automotive equipment is required
Other duties will include:
- Refinishes body parts by mixing paints; matching colours; spray painting primer and finishing coats; applying touch-up paint
- Maintains quality service by following repair standards, correcting deficiencies; obtaining approval from customer
- Maintains tools and equipment by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs
- Maintains supplies inventory by checking stock; anticipating needs; placing and expediting orders; verifying receipt
- Maintains safe work environment by adhering to work standards and practices
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading manufacturers' specifications
- Enhances organisation reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
